A Brief History of Michelin Stars
The story of Michelin stars begins with the creation of the Michelin Guide in 1900 by brothers André and Édouard Michelin, founders of the famous tire company. Originally, this guide was a simple booklet given to motorists to help them find garages, gas stations, hotels and restaurants during their journeys.
In 1926 , the Michelin Guide began to distinguish quality restaurants by awarding them a star . Due to its success, the system evolved: in 1931 , the famous one, two, or three-star classification was introduced.
Here is what the stars mean:
- 1 star: A very good restaurant in its category.
- 2 stars: Excellent cuisine, well worth a detour.
- 3 stars: Exceptional cuisine, which alone justifies the trip.
The Michelin Guide relies on anonymous inspectors, who evaluate the quality of the products, the mastery of cooking techniques, the harmony of flavors, the personality of the chef and the consistency of the dishes.
Today, Michelin stars have become a global benchmark in gastronomy. They reward the excellence, expertise, and creativity of the greatest chefs.
